Artist INC is a cutting edge training seminar that addresses the specific business needs and challenges artists of all disciplines face every day. Limited to 25 participants per session, artists gather for one night a week for eight weeks to learn business skills specific to their art practice and apply those skills cooperatively with their peers. Using an innovative class design, artists learn and grow together through artist facilitator mentoring, small group application activities, as well as large group discussions and multi-media lectures. Now entering its fourth year, the Artist INC workshop has been completed by 64 Omaha metro artists.
Participating artists will gain:
- tools and skills in arts planning, marketing, finance, law, and technology
- an increased knowledge of and ability to access local and national art business resources;
- a strategic artist's plan for pursuing, marketing and sustaining their art
- a long-term network of cross-discipline, diverse artists to provide peer learning and support into the future.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Not the same old business skills class . . .
Whereas traditional professional development programs are primarily lecture driven with content developed and presented on an ad hoc basis by business professionals, Artist INC employs a unique class design focusing on the three major components of adult learning:
- peer networks
Artist INC uses local artist facilitators- Mary Zicafoose, Watie White, Susan Knight, Ellen Struve, and Bart Vargas- that have demonstrated success in the business end of their artistic career to lead large group discussions, present artist-specific content in the functional areas of business and to lead small group discussion teams. Through weekly small group discussion teams artists practice application of the business concepts presented in class and build long-term networks of peers to access for professional development after the workshop. The three-hour weekly class is divided in thirds, with the first hour focused on directed large group discussion of topical issues, the second hour featuring local community experts lecturing on the functional areas of business, and the third hour spent in small group discussion and direct application of class concepts.
Artist INC Live Omaha is open to artists of all disciplines. Applicants must be 21 years of age or older, and may not be a degree-seeking student. Due to the weekly in-person attendance required for the workshop, Artist INC recommends participants live within a 90-mile radius of Omaha.
How to Apply
Applications are reviewed by representatives of the art community, as well as artists and arts professionals in the field. The selected participants will reflect a balanced cross-section of artists from multiple disciplines, backgrounds and ethnicities.
Applicants of all artistic disciplines must complete a narrative application form, submit their resume/CV and digital work sample online through Submittable.com during the open application period.
